Tennessee Emerges as a Hub for Black-Owned Business Growth
In recent years, Tennessee has emerged as a notable epicentre for the growth of Black-owned employer firms. National data shows that between 2017 and 2022, Black-owned employer businesses increased by approximately 56.9 percent, rising from roughly 124,000 to nearly 194,600 nationwide. This near 57 percent surge in just five years positions Tennessee and other southern states at the forefront of national Black entrepreneurship.
What Is Driving the Growth
Purposeful investment in mentorship, access to capital, and supportive development programmes has played a central role in Tennessee’s upward trajectory. Municipal supplier-diversity initiatives in cities such as Nashville and Memphis reflect a broader commitment that closely aligns with the mission of Black Pages International. These efforts focus on connecting Black-owned firms to stronger networks, increased visibility, and sustainable business growth.
Building Businesses That Create Jobs
Black Pages International highlights Tennessee-based businesses across logistics, retail collectives, creative agencies, technology startups, and professional services. These firms are not only generating profit but are also actively mentoring emerging entrepreneurs. Notably, more than 71 percent of these businesses have indicated intentions to hire in 2025, underscoring their role in job creation and local economic development.
Progress Alongside Persistent Barriers
Despite significant gains, structural barriers remain. Access to large-scale contracts, tailored commercial banking solutions, and long-term scalability continues to challenge businesses operating in majority-Black municipalities. By amplifying both successes and remaining gaps, Black Pages International encourages collaboration, learning, and strategic investment across regions.

Tennessee’s rise in Black entrepreneurship represents more than a local achievement. Each milestone reached becomes a blueprint for other states to follow.
