Have you ever wondered about the untold stories of Black Chicagoans? The city has a plan to bring these stories to light. It’s called the Black Chicago Heritage Initiative (BCHI).

What is the Black Chicago Heritage Initiative?

The BCHI is a project led by the City of Chicago. Its goal is simple: to uncover, save, and share the hidden stories of Black people in Chicago. This project covers all 77 neighborhoods in the city.

Why Does This Matter?

Chicago is home to many Black Americans. In fact, nearly one-third of the city’s residents are Black. Many of these families came to Chicago during the Great Migration. This was a time when many Black people moved from the South to northern cities. These newcomers brought their culture, skills, and dreams with them. They helped shape Chicago into the vibrant city it is today. But many of their stories have been forgotten or overlooked.

What Does the Initiative Do?

The BCHI works to:

  1. Discover untold stories
  2. Preserve memories and keepsakes
  3. Highlight unsung heroes
  4. Build pride in Black Chicago’s heritage

How Can You Get Involved?

The BCHI wants to hear from you. Do you have old photos, letters, or family heirlooms? These items can help tell the story of Black Chicago. The initiative recently held an event where people could share and digitally archive their historical items.

Why This Matters to Black Pages International

At Black Pages International, we believe in the power of community and heritage. Projects like the BCHI align with our mission to empower and celebrate Black achievement. By uncovering these stories, we can inspire the next generation of Black entrepreneurs and leaders.

What’s Next?

The BCHI is just getting started. They’re creating tours, maps, and resources to help people explore Black Chicago’s rich history. Keep an eye out for these exciting developments. Remember, your family’s story is part of Chicago’s story. By sharing it, you help weave the rich tapestry of our city’s history. Are you ready to be part of this exciting journey through Black Chicago’s past and present?
